Job Title: Head, Global Environmental Sustainability Operations

Location: Lexington, MA pr Zurich, Switzerland

About the role:

Exciting opportunity to join Takeda’s active and growing Environmental Sustainability Team as we develop and implement effective strategies to minimize our environmental footprint and advance our net-zero ambition while supporting our mission to develop and deliver life-saving medications to patients.

  • Highly visible role responsible for leading the development and implementation of Takeda’s strategy to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to operations, including scopes 1 and 2, before 2035.
  • Lead cross-functional team in determining and executing strategies for a net-zero future including optimizing renewable energy across Takeda's operations, partnering with sites and engineering teams to drive demand reduction and energy efficiency, and ensuring alignment with sustainability goals.
  • Engage teams to improve data collection and analytics processes on site and Takeda enterprise-wide performance to facilitate more mature data management, forecasting and benchmarking.
  • Drive Takeda's engagement within the voluntary carbon market (VCM), including strategic positioning and purchasing of carbon removal projects.

How you will contribute:

  • Report to the Global Head of Environment and Sustainability and determine and execute Takeda’s net-zero strategy with primary responsibility for scope 1 & 2 emissions.
  • Lead cross-functional project team(s) in the development of a scope 1 & 2 strategy and associated net-zero road map. Includes the development of program objectives, charters, project plans, goals, communications, tools, etc.
  • Work with key stakeholders (e.g., Engineering, Procurement, Facilities, Supply Chain, Legal, Finance, HR) and within Takeda’s business structure to drive progress toward environmental sustainability goals at manufacturing sites and across the enterprise.
  • Proactively identifies, addresses, and resolves project challenges, keeping leadership informed of critical considerations.
  • Assists key Takeda business partners in implementing effective strategies to incorporate environmental sustainability considerations in applicable processes to achieve GHG emissions reductions and other goals.
  • Maintains strategic alignment between various stakeholders (e.g. Engineering, BioLife, Real Estate & Facilities, Fleet, manufacturing sites, etc.) to ensure progress toward the net-zero ambition while supporting business functions.
  • Maintains high performance and morale of team/function through effective leadership and collaboration with key business partners.
  • Ensures the continuous improvement of data and reporting systems needed to support goal accomplishment including meeting external reporting and assurance requirements, driving alignment on methodological accounting and measurement decisions and supporting analytics and forecasting of emissions.
  • Leads Takeda’s overall strategy in the voluntary carbon market, including long-term strategic investments in carbon removals as well as guidance for measurement and transparency.

What you bring to Takeda:

  • Bachelor's degree in scientific fields such as Environmental Management, Sustainability, Chemistry, Engineering, or other related science/engineering degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7-10+ years relevant environmental sustainability, environmental management, engineering, supply chain, or equivalent consulting experience.
  • 10+ years of environmental sustainability experience in a site and/or corporate role in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry or an industry of similar complexity and structure.
  • Subject matter expertise in improving environmental sustainability operations, including experience with implementing renewable energy solutions and developing more sustainable fleet strategies to drive reductions in scopes 1 + 2 GHG emissions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to find solutions to challenges. Previous experience leading global teams; experience collaborating with global cross-functional teams, external stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, or related industries and corporate-level sustainability/ESG experience are desired.
  • Ability to travel based on business needs.

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Proven history as a successful environmental sustainability change agent within a similar business/industry.
  • Ability to effectively lead, influence, and motivate multi-functional teams.
  • Demonstrable experience and subject matter expertise in Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions reduction strategies, measurement and reporting.
  • Familiarity with GHG emissions accounting across scopes, including ability to interpret existing and future standards and/or methodologies to understanding the implications on Takeda’s Scope 1 & 2 emissions.
  • Demonstrate expertise in navigating the voluntary carbon market landscape, including knowledge of relevant standards, protocols, and best practices to effectively leverage carbon offsetting opportunities through carbon removals in alignment with organizational goals.
  • A demonstrated understanding of environmental sustainability standards and guidelines – particularly as related to climate change, renewable energy technologies, purchased renewable energy strategies, fleet, energy efficiency and management, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing and complex projects and driving change across a business using indirect resources.
  • Understanding of procurement systems and processes, engineering projects and operational sustainability challenges.
  • Proven ability to build support for significant business changes through the development of strategic business partnership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language) with the ability to influence key stakeholders, present to executive teams and provide training support.
  • Knowledge, experience and success driving sustainability efforts.

  • Support Global Head of Environment and Sustainability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant sustainability ideas and best practices. Share knowledge of current and emerging sustainability requirements and develop processes to monitor new developments, requirements and promising innovations.
  • Willingness to embrace data/digital, machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation to continuously improve processes.

Complexity

  • Ability to identify and prioritize the main activities within the annual plan but also to react immediately to those unplanned issues requiring response (ex. reputation or compliance issues).
  • Ability to work independently, meet requirements and deadlines from multiple stakeholders, and execute tasks strategically in a fast-paced environment. 

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

  • Work in a controlled environment requiring special gowning and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. This may include additional hearing protection for loud areas.
  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.
  • Work in a cold, wet environment.
  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.
  • Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$169,400.00 - $266,200.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-termincentives. U.S.based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
