Claudia K.

Interim Head of Global Commercial for Takeda’s Vaccine Business Unit
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
Employee Since 2017

A Career Devoted to Patients, Public Health, and Learning

Much like Takeda’s heritage of providing life-changing medicines, working in the healthcare field spans three generations of Claudia’s family. Currently, she serves as the Interim Head of Global Commercial for Takeda’s Vaccine Business Unit. Her father worked his entire life in the pharmaceutical sector, her sister is a PharmD and works in the field of regulatory compliance in promotion and advertising, another sister has made documentary films on health-related topics, and her daughter is currently studying public health. Encouraged at an early age to get a strong education and be anything she wanted, Claudia followed in her father’s footsteps as she saw the impact excellent healthcare can have in the lives of patients.

Prior to joining Takeda in 2017, Claudia worked at several pharmaceutical companies, devoting her time and energy to vaccines. It was Takeda’s product portfolio and pipeline, along with feedback from people in the industry, that attracted her to join the Company. “I heard great things about Takeda’s values, patient-centricity, focus, and how employees are treated,” explains Claudia. “Most companies have a view that what they are doing is for the patient. When I interviewed, everyone I spoke with shared this passion and enthusiasm. Now that I am here, I can say that what makes Takeda different is that we truly live and breathe patient-centricity every day.”

Over the course of her career, she played a part in launching vaccines to protect children and adults against such diseases as human papillomavirus (HPV), rotavirus, herpes zoster (commonly known as chickenpox and shingles), meningitis, influenza, and is now working towards the potential launch of Takeda’s dengue vaccine candidate. “Playing a role within vaccines is exciting,” Claudia shares. “It motivates you to get up and get to work every day. Contributing to the launch and access of vaccines has an impact on public health and so many people’s lives. It’s tremendously rewarding.”

In her role, Claudia’s core responsibilities are ensuring patients have access to vaccines and empowering her team to do their best work. In this cross-functional position, she partners closely with other areas of Takeda Vaccines, including Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, and Communications. “Collaboration is key. You have to have a holistic view across all functions to understand how we create value for patients, stakeholders, and decision makers,” she explains.

Within Takeda Vaccines, there is a remarkable amount of expertise and enthusiasm. With admiration in her voice, Claudia talks about her small, yet mighty, team. “Two of my team members first worked with Takeda on their doctoral thesis while studying at the Harvard School of Public Health. Both are smart and thoughtful and bring both a business and public health perspective to solving the problems we address. The other member of my team is a talented health economist. She is a knowledgeable subject matter expert and always eager to learn new things and take on new projects. I am blessed to have very good people on my team and I’m hoping to expand it with additional talent.”

As a working mother, it’s very important for Claudia to balance her responsibilities to her work, her team, her family, and to herself. At her core, she’s a lifelong learner. In the midst of working on a doctoral degree in public health leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago, she already holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Boston University and an MBA from Babson Graduate School of Business. “I believe you have to continuously learn throughout your life and that you’re never too old to go back to school,” remarks Claudia. “I’m applying what I am learning to my daily work and life. Learning allows me to continue to make a positive impact on public health.”
