As a Director, GI / Inflammation Drug Discovery Research working on the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit team, you will be empowered to create and communicate a clear vision and strategy for one or more areas of focus within the GI Inflammation portfolio, directed toward the establishment and progression of an industry-leading early stage drug discovery pipeline.

In this role, you will contribute to Takeda’s mission by providing significant input into overall GI Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) portfolio and department strategy. A typical day will include:

OBJECTIVES:

Senior organizational leader within the GI / Inflammation arm of the GI Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) responsible for:  

  • Helping craft, communicate and drive GI / Inflammation drug discovery portfolio strategy

  • Build an industry-leading GI / Inflammation drug discovery pipeline based on established strategy through direct program leadership and/or via leadership of project champion personnel. 

  • Lead the evaluation and integration of external programs and academic collaborations into GI / Inflammation pipeline, in line with established strategic focus areas.

  • Provides significant input into overall GI Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) portfolio and department strategy.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for the validation, nomination and progression of drug discovery pipeline programs in the GI/Inflammation area through direct project champion roles and leadership of project champion personnel.  

  • Responsible for creating and communicating a clear vision and strategy for one or more areas of focus within the GI Inflammation portfolio, directed toward establishment and progression of an industry-leading early stage drug discovery pipeline

  • Responsible for the evaluation, establishment and integration of external programs and academic collaborations into GI / Inflammation pipeline in line with established strategic focus areas.

  • Provides significant input into overall GI Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) portfolio and department strategy including areas of scientific and drug-discovery focus, partnerships, collaborations, and indication selection

  • Matrix with other parts of the Takeda drug discovery organization including chemistry, DMPK, safety, translational, biomarker, and clinical development to advance pipeline programs

  • Provides leadership and strategic support to other parts of the Takeda organization, and/or to external collaborators

  • Represent the GI / Inflammation division and the GI DDU in both internal and external forums

  • Accountable for the development of organizational culture and capabilities

  • Responsible for management of resourcing and budget planning for his/her area of focus

  • Outstanding expertise and depth of knowledge in advancing drug discovery programs in immunology or immunology-adjacent fields

  • Keeps up with the up-to-date scientific advancement in the academic and biotech arenas (e.g. competitive landscape, new technology, new research portfolio, and new partnerships)

  • Has demonstrated experience in organizational leadership responsibility, including primary responsibility for a defined function, department, or research area

  • Demonstrated experience in helping early career scientists develop into drug discovery project leaders

  • Demonstrated excellence in clear and effective communication

  • Ability to convey complex concepts in simple to understand terms

  • Flexibility to navigate both high level and detail-focused discussions with different audiences while maintaining clarity

  • Work closely with translational and biomarker teams to identify novel go-to-clinic approaches (ex: subpopulations, niche indications, patient stratification approaches) and companion biomarker strategies

  • Incorporate novel methods into pipeline programs

  • Utilize creative approaches to accelerate programs where applicable

Complexity

  • Guides programs, teams and staff in heavily matrixed environment, incorporating diverse views and perspectives

  • May interface with external discovery teams and/or academic collaborators to impact internal program deliverables.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • PhD degree in a scientific discipline with 12+ years experience, or

  • MS with 16+ years experience, or

  • BS with 18+ years experience

  • 7 years of Industry experience required

  • 7 years of managerial experience required

  • Initiates and leads internal interactions with broad array of organizational functions

  • Initiates and leads external interactions with partners and collaborators

  • Frequent contact with internal and external personnel at various management levels

  • Relevant license/skills
