As an Associate Scientist, GI / Inflammation Research, working on the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) team, you will be empowered to design, execute and perform analysis of in vitro experiments to advance GI / Inflammation pipeline programs.


  • Independently design, execute and perform analysis of in vitro experiments to advance GI / Inflammation pipeline programs, including independent troubleshooting

  • Independently identifies and implements new assay technologies that have an impact on project advancement, assay throughput and/or assay performance

  • Provides technical leadership for research project implementation and coordination


  • Utilizes a battery of in vitro assay technologies in primary cell types and cell lines to execute on GI/Inflammation pipeline programs including (but not limited to): ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence microscopy

  • May design and execute complex cell-based assays including co-cultures, 3D microtissues / organoids.

  • Independently plans and executes experiments for a research work group or project, troubleshoots complex problems specialized procedures, and change experimental design if necessary.

  • Develops and validates new methods to support completion of complex assignments within a project

  • Exercises independent judgement (selecting most appropriate methods, coordinating efforts, evaluating criteria for obtaining results)

  • Utilizes technical literature to implement novel procedures, changes and improvements within a project. Can duplicate and appropriately modify experimental procedures based on the literature.

  • Interprets and analyzes data, helping to incorporate results into overall scientific projects; Independently generates novel hypothesis

  • Maintains a proactive and vocal approach to improving departmental efficiency;

  • Able to summarize and present literature data within department and occasionally to broader audiences

  • Prepares detailed protocols / SOPs that enable transfer of validated assays to project team members and collaborators


Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Demonstrates in-depth technical knowledge within discipline

  • Extensive experience with multiple techniques commonly used in immunology, including ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, cell viability.

  • Applies in-depth knowledge of concepts, applications and methods as the recognized technical expert in subfield

  • Able to clarify requests and provide suggestions and put data into context

  • Understands why one series of experiments is more appropriate than others


  • Demonstrated excellence in clear and effective verbal and written communication

  • Ability to convey complex concepts in simple to understand terms

  • Flexibility to navigate discussions with different audiences while maintaining clarity


  • Independently identifies and implements new assay technologies that have an impact on project advancement, assay throughput and/or assay performance

  • Receives high level instructions on all work; acts independently to determine methods on new assignments


  • BS in a scientific discipline, or equivalent with 8+ years experience, or MS in a scientific discipline, or equivalent with 5+ years experience
