We focus our research and development on the core therapeutic areas of oncology, gastroenterology, neuroscience, and on providing vaccines that address the most important infectious diseases. Novel products, especially in oncology and gastroenterology, as well as our presence in emerging markets, fuel our growth.

Responsibilities

The EHS Program Lead will be responsible for partnering with Los Angeles (LA) and Van Nuys (VN) site personnel to promote a strong EHS culture, execute company safety and health policies, and ensure compliance to all applicable local and regional regulations. This role will interface with subject matter experts from various departments to support facility’s ongoing compliance and risk reduction efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement applicable EHS safety and health programs to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  • Develop, conduct and/or supervise necessary occupational exposure assessments through Industrial Hygiene surveys.
  • Lead and participate in investigations to effectively identify the root causes with applicable corrective actions to mitigate reoccurrence.
  • Participate in EHS inspections and GEMBA walks which include identification of corrective actions and timely resolution of items identified.
  • Ensure effective management of respiratory protection evaluations and audiometric testing through the Occupational Health onsite clinic.
  • Interact with other departments in regular meetings to provide EH&S support and to identify needs and gaps.
  • Manage the risk assessments conducted, analyze trends and integration into area owned standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  • Act as the Record Information Management (RIM) Steward for the EHS Team through management of EHS documented information.
  • Influence and collaborate with key stakeholders cross-functionally within Manufacturing, QC lab, Critical Systems, Maintenance, and Engineering organizations to provide support and assure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and company EHS requirements.
  • Lead Safety Committees, develop charters and provide direction and guidance.
  • Support site Emergency Response Teams, develop charter and maintain operational readiness.
  • Conduct Instructor-Led training as assigned.
  • Support construction and maintenance activities from an EHS perspective.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of EH&S including related laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and implement EHS Management Systems including safety and health programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in a research laboratory, biotechnology or pharmaceutical environment is a plus.
  • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations, as well as ability to analyze situations and provide necessary leadership on behalf of the department.
  • Ability to recognize hazards, drive continual improvement, and promote practical alternatives for risk reduction and risk control measures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including technical staff, site leaders, hourly personnel and be able to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results.
  • High energy and passion for excellence, bias for action, adaptability, and resilience.
  • Must have competencies of analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal understanding, initiative, team work, as well as quality orientation/attention to detail.


Education and/or experience
Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or other related technical discipline with 3+ years of related experience in the HSE or Manufacturing field, preferable in a complex, high risk environment desired. Some leadership experience preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 10 pounds routinely and and/or move up to 35 pounds (with assistance) occasionally.
  • In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions in the facility.


Working Environment

  • Must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.
  • No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in the manufacturing environment.
  • Must be able to work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and filter aid that may require respiratory protection. Facial hair must be removed if required to wear respirator.
  • Must be able to work in a cold, wet environment.
  • Must be able to work multiple shifts, including weekends.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required (only for non-exempt positions).
  • May be required to work in a confined area.
  • Some Clean Room and cool/hot storage conditions.
