Join us as a Medical Affairs Director (Gastroenterology) in our UK offices based in London Paddington.

As a key position within the organisation with a level of visibility and leadership, this is an ideal role for someone looking to step up into either a UK Medical Director or above-country leadership role.

As our successful Medical Affairs Director you will take overall responsibility for the Gastrointestinal Medical Affairs team within Takeda UK, comprising 11 individuals. This is a critically important area for Takeda, who have identified gastroenterology as a one of 5 therapeutic areas the company will build it’s future around. The other areas of focus are oncology, rare diseases, plasma-derived therapies and vaccines.

In the gastroenterology filed, Takeda currently have 3 therapies licensed in Europe; (i) Vedolizumab, an anti-integrin monoclonal antibody licensed for the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis; (ii) Darvadstrocel, a stem cell therapy for the management of complex perianal fistulae in patients with Crohn’s Disease and (iii) Teduglutide, a treatment for short bowel syndrome.

This is an important leadership role within the business. In this role you will be responsible for leading and developing a team comprising 3 office-based Medical Managers and an MSL team leader who in turn heads up both MSL and Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) teams.

Other responsibilities include leading the development and delivery of the gastroenterology medical affairs plan, which is underpinned by a substantial budget that must be managed appropriately.

The medical affairs plan would include substantial projects in the areas of evidence generation, insight gathering, medical communications and education as well as co-created projects delivered in collaboration with functions such as marketing and or market access.

In this role you will also be expected to be an active member of the Medical Leadership Team. In this capacity you will take responsibility for providing leadership and overseeing projects across the entire medical function which comprises some 60 individuals.

Person Specification

  • Registered Pharmacist or Physician
  • Relevant post-registration clinical experience.
  • Substantial experience of medical affairs gained in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience of a number of facets of Medical Affairs, eg evidence generation, developing external expert networks, flexing between therapy areas, involvement in strategic and tactical planning processes
  • Can do attitude with the ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm in others
  • Professional presence with high level of credibility
  • Substantial people management experience and leadership capability
