The Country Medical Lead will

  • Develop and implement medical strategic and tactical plans for relevant therapy areas as part of a UK brand planning process
  • Manage, coach and develop direct reports, for example Medical Advisors and MSLs, including objective setting and measuring performance vs objectives
  • Within relevant therapy areas, lead the systematic identification of the scientific exchange needs of Key Opinion Leaders, investigators and other stakeholders
  • Maintain personal and medical team expertise in relevant disease areas and Medical best practices
  • Ensure that relevant commercial team is adequately supported by the Medical function in terms of eg medical input into commercial projects, copy approval, field force training etc…
  • Develop and implement best-in-class scientific programs with external vendors, KOLs and investigators
  • Identify evidence gaps relevant to the UK and lead the development of local evidence generation activities
  • Effectively manage relevant therapy area medical budget, ensuring that projects deliver on time and to budget
  • As a member of the Medical Lead team, contribute to the success of the Medical function
  • Lead or participate in various projects and workstreams across the wider business

Key Accountabilities

Develop and implement relevant therapy area medical plans

  • Collaborate with brand team to develop strategic plans for key medicines / therapy area
  • Develop tactical plans which are fully aligned to strategy and accompanied by robust budget / timeline estimates and meaningful KPIs
  • Tactics will generally include the broad topics of advice seeking, medical education and evidence generation

Systematically lead identification of the scientific exchange needs of KOLs, investigators and other stakeholders in patient care, establish strong professional relationships, and provide credible scientific expertise

  • Develop and maintain “peer-to-peer” scientific relationships with key thought leaders in healthcare, academia and government organisations
  • Represent Takeda in key external meetings including scientific symposia and advisory boards.
  • Lead UK KOL medical planning process

Lead the design and implementation of best-in-class scientific programs with external KOLs and investigators

  • Run cross functional data gap workshops to identify addressable UK-relevant data gaps
  • Work with external vendors and CROs to design and deliver Takeda-sponsored evidence generation activities
  • Identify relevant medical education needs of the clinical community and develop appropriate multichannel educational solutions
  • Ensure that robust and appropriate plans are in place for working with individual KOLs
  • Provide medical support for above-county driven clinical research programs and registries at UK level
  • Effectively manage relevant therapy area medical budget
  • Procure and effectively work with appropriate vendors (eg Med Ed agencies, CROs etc…) to develop and deliver scientific programmes

Manage the therapy area Medical team

  • Will generally include Medical Advisor(s) and MSL(s)
  • Lead robust recruitment process for open roles, with HR support
  • Set stretching objectives for all reports
  • Provide appropriate coaching, feedback and development opportunities for all reports
  • Provide mentoring for individuals who are not line reports
  • Support local team disease area and product knowledge through scientific training
  • Contribute to medical training of field-based commercial personnel as required
  • Maintain personal and medical team expertise in relevant disease areas and Medical Affairs and Medical Research best practices

Maintain knowledge base and scientific expertise on all assigned Takeda therapy areas and products

  • Ensure that direct reports are appropriately trained and keep their knowledge base and skills up to date
  • Develop and update knowledge of applicable pharmaceutical guidelines and regulations, including ABPI Code of Practice, GCP and company policies
  • Attend and report back on relevant regional, national and international scientific and patient advocacy meetings as required

Key skills required

  • A medical degree (MD) is strongly preferred; an advanced degree in life sciences / pharmacy is required
  • GMC or GPhC membership is strongly preferred
  • Substantial experience in biopharmaceutical medicine is required
  • Minimum proven experience in Medical Affairs
  • Experience designing and leading interventional or RWE studies is preferred
  • Experience in the relevant therapy areas is preferred
  • Strong focus on personal accountability and ownership – constantly challenging oneself to take responsibility for continuous performance improvement and operational excellence; highly reliable and predictable for internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to identify and develop target competencies (integrity, openness, competence, consistency, loyalty)  in one’s self and the team
  • Good people management skills with demonstrated ability to set goals and objectives, and establish and recalibrate priorities
  • Establishes highly credible relationships and has personal impact through engaging respectfully and professionally
  • Able to expertly exchange scientific ideas and information openly and effectively with key opinion leaders and with colleagues
  • Able to expertly manage challenging conversations and handle objections
  • Strongly focused on customer and patient needs
  • Able to effectively lead and participate in multidisciplinary and virtual teams
  • Effective listening skills
  • Strong ability to partner and collaborate appropriately with Commercial functions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
