Reporting to the Head of GI Discovery Alliance Management in the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit (GI DDU), this role will be responsible for alliance and project management of multiple collaborations across the GI DDU hybrid drug discovery model (externalized and internal research). This role will work to support a robust alliance and project management infrastructure serving the global team. Candidates will be energetic, flexible, thorough, and comfortable working in a fast-moving, matrixed drug discovery group.


  • Lead discovery research alliance management activities for assigned industrial and academic alliances in collaboration with Scientific Project Leaders based in Boston and San Diego

  • Initiate and manage highly collaborative cross-functional relationships within Takeda and outside with Takeda partners and service providers in support of GI DDU alliances and projects.

  • Lead project management activities for assigned projects to support project execution covering reporting, project planning, documentation workflow, budgeting, and risk management.

  • Plans ahead with Scientific Leaders to put in place all elements of Scientific Plans and all components that will go into the future portfolio strategy documents for each assigned GI DDU project

  • Be a proactive voice and the “single source of truth” for monitoring and reporting of alliance and project issues, plans, budgets and resources.

  • Energetically engage with the entire DDU team to assure visibility of all DDU key performance indicators and make critical contributions to alliance and project operations to accelerate delivery and meet overall DDU performance goals


  • Manage the alliance lifecycle for all assigned alliances in collaboration with Scientific Project Leaders following R&D Partnership Center of Excellence guidelines.

  • Collaborates with external and internal key stakeholders to establish a strong working relationship, manage key issues, ensure effective governance, drive successful execution of our partnered assets, and further establish Takeda as a preferred strategic partner of choice.

  • Proactively monitor contractual obligations and deliverables for both Takeda and its alliance partner to ensure responsibilities are met. Understands the relevant contractual agreement(s) in detail, including, strategic intent, obligations, including potential changes in partnership agreements and renegotiations.

  • Responsible for ensuring contractual changes are appropriately documented and for managing invoicing and payments for assigned alliances and projects.

  • Proactively identify risks and prepare risk mitigation action plans with internal and external stakeholders to maintain productive collaborations.

  • Lead governance and project meetings, including the creation and distribution of meeting agendas and minutes, and drive completion of action items. Ensure good meeting disciplines are continuously maintained (with supporting documentation) so that there is a clear logical record of events for each project or partnership.

  • Track progress against alliance/project plans and ensures project teams/stakeholders have the tools necessary to deliver assays/contracts/decisions etc

  • Manage all alliance/project reporting and documentation for assigned alliances/projects using available tools and databases.  Ensure deliverables are provided on schedule and data integrity to support accurate reporting and communications.

  • Coach and support Scientific Project Leaders to drive alliances/projects and to minimize out of scope or out of budget situations.

  • Ensure smooth cross-functionally liaisons with critical functions for project success (Legal, Finance, Sourcing, HR, and across all scientific functions as necessary). Be accountable for good budgetary disciplines and adherence to contractual commitments.

  • Drive continuous improvement activities for all alliance and project management processes.


Technical/Functional Expertise

  • Demonstrates technical knowledge in alliance and project management

  • Sound scientific knowledge with Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Science or Management related discipline with 5-9 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry or research focused academic environment, with a demonstrable broad understanding of drug discovery & development practices.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a collaboration role working directly with alliance partners as part of an alliance or account team 

  • Process oriented, logical thinker with a high level of discipline and thorough attention to detail who drives for results and focuses on bigger picture/departmental objectives.

  • Ability to communicate complex information succinctly in verbal and written updates and provide analysis to support recommendations and decisions

  • Confident communicator, utilizing tact and diplomacy up/down hierarchy and across matrix.

  • Proactive problem solver with strong project planning skills who can advocate for and negotiate win-win scenarios

  • Self-motivated and self-directing to deliver the core responsibilities of the role and motivated to learn and expand skillset beyond the scope of the role

  • Solid financial knowledge of cost-based budgeting (internal and external costs) and ability to seek out savings/efficiencies

  • Strong presentation skills with competence in using PowerPoint, MS Project, and Excel to above average proficiency.

  • Competent using video conferencing programs/technologies to run meetings

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required


  • Takeda Boston or San Diego office based.

  • Hybrid office model with work from home multiple days a week

  • Occasional before or after work hours for collaboration meetings in differing time zones.

  • Occasional travel to other Takeda sites and partner meetings may be required
