This individual will be part of a small team responsible for performing upstream development of viral vector processes. The scope of work includes cell banking, cell expansion, and bioreactor unit operations. Engineer III will contribute to timely completion of small-scale experiments, optimization, scale-up, technology transfer, and GMP floor support for programs that bring new Cell- and Gene Therapy products to pre-clinical, clinical, and process validation manufacturing phases. This individual will apply basic knowledge from various technical areas, industry standards and practices, provides quality and productive output that is consistently timely, reliable and reproducible.

Engineer III must be customer focused, results-oriented, science-driven and embrace Takeda's values.


•    (60%) Provide technical support and apply knowledge and execute experiments toward development and optimization of cell culture processes and in line with overall project plan and supervised milestones. Manage, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot bench-top 2D and 3D cultures and related control systems. Design and oversight of GMP, engineering and pre-clinical batches.  Interacts with manufacturing operations staff, participates during troubleshooting of issues.  Executes IND-and BLA-enabling studies.

•    (25%) Documents data accurately in laboratory notebooks as per established company guidelines and procedures.  Drafts technical reports, memos, procedures, technology transfer packages and presentations.  Contributes to CMC sections of regulatory submissions.  Assists with external abstracts, presentations and publications.

•    (15%) Participate in and contribute to team meetings, including sub-teams, project teams, tech. transfer teams, and departmental meetings.



  • Associates degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering or related pharmaceutical science and 4+ years relevant industry experience 

  • Bachelors degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering or related pharmaceutical science; 2+ years relevant industry experience 

  • Masters degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, engineering or related pharmaceutical science; 0-2 years relevant industry experience 

  • Previous experience working in lab setting or Masters degree plus appropriate laboratory training

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Analytical and Problem Solving Skills -Able to troubleshoot critical issues or problems and resolve routine issues using appropriate information. 

  • Teamwork -- Ability to work within department groups/team.

  • Communication Skills - Expresses one’s self clearly and concisely within function; documents issues and/or concerns concisely with colleagues; timely and effectively communicates issues to supervisor

  • Organization – Exercises good time management skills 

  • Technical - Proficient in use of applicable lab equipment and operations 


  • Ability to manipulate 10-15 lb vessels


  • May require approximately 5% (local) travel.


Biologics - Cell Culture: The successful candidate will:

  • Have working knowledge and experience with mammalian cell culture process development, process scale-up, tech. transfer, and GMP manufacturing support

  • Have experience with Quality-by-design, design-of-experiment methodology and statistical data analysis

  • Embrace and demonstrate teamwork/collaboration and the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively in both oral and written format

  • Demonstrate ownership in executing bioreactor process development, tech. transfer, and manufacturing support

  • Be customer-focused, results-oriented, science-driven, and embrace Takeda’s values

  • Have the ability to proactively learn new technologies and manage changes in bioreactor process development and process scale-up
