Global Patient Safety Evaluation (Pharmacovigilance)

Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience. The summer internship program is 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Compensation is competitive, and financed temporary housing is available to those who qualify. Our internship program also provides you the opportunity to network with people at Takeda through various planned events and activities.

With a mission to “Ensure Patient Safety”, the Global Patient Safety Evaluation (GPSE) function at Takeda is responsible for pharmacovigilance (PV) activities including the detection, assessment, management, monitoring, and prevention of adverse events.  GPSE has oversight of the benefit-risk profile assessment for all Takeda products.  Excellence in patient safety requires mastery of medical and scientific disciplines as well as operational excellence and compliance. 


  • Experience in each of the following MS Office applications:
    • MS Outlook - Proficient
    • MS Word - Proficient
    • MS Excel - Proficient
    • MS PowerPoint - Proficient
  • Must be deadline driven and have a high level of organizational and planning skills
  • The ideal candidate exhibits strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills; he or she also possesses the ability to work well in teams, effectively manage multiple projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.

Alofisel, as a novel ATMP (Advanced therapy medicinal product) provides new possibilities for the unmet medical needs of patients who suffer from the complex perianal fistula.  This product has been approved by the EMA. Significant work remains to be done to support the additional regulatory submissions and obtain market authorizations.  Thus, the objectives of our internship program are:

  • Promote Takeda’s employer brand and develop strategic partnerships with core universities;
  • Create Takeda ambassadors who share and promote our patient-centric mission.
  • Advocate Takeda’s scientific leadership in the industry for developing novel therapies for patients’ unmet medical needs.
  • Build a pipeline of talent for the future, including full-time employment opportunities.
  • Support the Alofisel program PV activities with minimal financial impact compared to the hire of a temporary resource.

The prospective intern can support the GPSE organization in many groups, but Global Medical Safety is the primary scientific focus. Deeply involved in the routine pharmacovigilance activities in this group, this intern will have a strong understanding of TAKEDA’s core values, which promotes the GPSE’s patient-centric mission. More specifically, he or she will work at the forefront of stem cell therapy in the gastrointestinal field, which demonstrates TAKEDA’s leading position in the pharmaceutical industry. At the Alofisel product level, he or she will predominantly work on the analysis of the safety information for Alofisel new indications


  • Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited university for the semester before and immediately following the internship.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and have completed at least their sophomore year or be a graduate
  • level student pursuing either a PharmD or Master’s degree; for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, a major in a healthcare, pharmacy or life science field is preferred.
